what an odd and mostly depressing year. here are my personal highlights:
March/September: participated in CBC’s game show program Test the Nation on the American-Canadian team. Won a pen, mug, and bragging rights.
April: sent off giant application for permanent residency under family class.
July: completed most recent round of design education. honour student all four semesters and burnt out on projects and unrealistic expectations. no competitions entered, no awards won.
September: obtained permanent resident status in Canada. anyone who’s ever gone through the immigration experience will understand how amazing this actually is.
October: officially graduated.
September–December: interned at one of the big magazine publication companies. one of the better work/learning experiences i’ve had in recent years. emerged more confident in abilities and real world expectations.
lowlights:
watching friends lose jobs.
the closing/ending of several things i loved.
sciatica in my left leg (not life-threatening but inconvenient…like most things).
the important things that happened this year were Very Important and will help steer the course for the upcoming years.
one of my projects on deck is to redo my official website. the hosting is a bit wonky (sometimes it loads fine, mostly it loads “Bad Request (Invalid Hostname).” while i sort that out, i’m also tinkering with a new design. my web skills are limited to 1998 HTML. i haven’t graduated to CSS and Flash is beyond my comprehension.
the new website will house slideshows and PDFs of my design and artwork, PDFs of most of my articles, and magazine scans of most of the print publications i’ve written for (i’ll spare the masses from the “men’s publications,” most of which are just articles that i recycled from my old “relationship humour” sites and can be read at my Romance Impaired blog).
to get myself motivated to delve into the self-promotion, i created a new logo for myself.
it will be fussed with a bit more over time, but i like the shapes and the tasteful incorporation of argyle. and it’s classy enough that i could make the transition to banker or life coach or business enthusiast, depending on what i decide to tell people at dinner parties.
this blog is a collection of links and observations. i’ll be posting about all manners of creative things that appeal to me–from interesting graphic design to craft projects i’d like to tackle someday. occasionally i’ll share projects i’m working on or have completed.
